What is a backlink?
A backlink is a link from one website to another. For SEO purposes, a backlink to your business website from a trusted Australian source — a .gov.au site, a recognised industry directory, or a well-established local publication — tells Google your site is part of a credible neighbourhood. A small business earns them by:
- Real industry registries — being listed in genuine industry directories rather than anonymous link farms
- Partner mentions — links from the businesses and suppliers you actually work with
- Content worth citing — publishing material other people genuinely want to link to
Backlink quality matters far more than backlink quantity: one link from a relevant .gov.au or .org.au site outweighs hundreds of links from anonymous directory sites.
