What is "average position" in Google Search Console?

Average position in Google Search Console is the average ranking your page held across all the searches where it appeared, where position 1 is the top organic result. If a page showed at position 3 for one query and position 11 for another, the average blends them. Three things owner-operators commonly misread:

  • It is an average, not a fixed rank — one number hides a page ranking 2nd for one query and 30th for another
  • Positions 1–10 are page one; 11–20 is page two, where almost nobody clicks
  • It is averaged across queries and locations — your own searches from the office do not reflect it

Track the trend rather than the daily figure, and read it next to impressions and clicks. Average position improving from 18 to 9 is real progress even if clicks have not moved yet — you have arrived on page one, where clicks begin.
