What is internal linking and why does it matter for SEO?

Internal linking is the practice of linking from one page on your site to another, and it does two jobs at once - it helps visitors find related content and it tells Google how your pages relate and which matter most:

  • It spreads ranking strength - links from your strong pages (often the home page) pass authority to the deeper pages you want to rank.
  • It helps Google find pages - a page with no internal links pointing at it may never be discovered or indexed.
  • Descriptive anchor text helps - linking with the words emergency plumbing Brisbane tells Google what the target page is about; clicking here tells it nothing.
  • It signals importance - the pages you link to most often read as the ones you consider central.

Every time you publish a page, link to it from a relevant existing page - an orphaned page rarely ranks.
