What is on-page SEO?

On-page SEO is the set of changes you make to a page itself (title, headings, alt text, internal links, body, meta description) that help a search engine understand it. The half of SEO you control.

On-page SEO is the set of changes you make to a page itself so a search engine can understand it and show it for the right searches:

  • It covers the title tag, headings, image alt text, internal links, body content and meta description - the elements on the page, as opposed to off-page backlinks
  • It is the half of SEO you control - a change you can make this afternoon and measure in Google Search Console within 4-8 weeks
  • The minimum per page: a unique title tag under 60 characters with the target keyword, one clear H1, descriptive subheadings, alt text on images, and a meta description

A focused page about one specific service usually outranks a generic home page that lists that service among five others.

On-page SEO is the set of changes you make to a web page itself, the title tag, headings, image alt text, internal links, body content, and meta description, so a search engine can understand the page and show it for the right searches. It is the opposite of off-page SEO, which is the backlinks and mentions you earn on other sites. For a small business, on-page is the half that pays off fastest, because it is the half you control. A focused page about one specific service usually outranks a generic home page that lists that service among five others.

Why on-page is the half you can actually move

Off-page SEO needs other people to link to you and mention you on the sites search engines watch. That is slow, and it is mostly out of your hands. On-page SEO is a change you can make this afternoon, and you can see the before-and-after in Google Search Console within four to eight weeks. That is why we point owners at it first.

The smallest useful on-page SEO checklist

Each page should have:

  • A unique title tag under 60 characters containing the keyword the page should rank for. The title is the clickable blue link in Google results.
  • A meta description of 140 to 160 characters that summarises the page and gives a reason to click. Google reads it; so do customers.
  • One H1 heading that matches what the page is about, phrased the way a customer would actually search.
  • H2 subheadings that break the page into sections, question-shaped where the page answers a question.
  • Image alt text that describes each image, for accessibility and because search engines read it.
  • Internal links to other relevant pages on your own site, with descriptive anchor text, not "click here".

What does not work anymore

The meta keywords tag stopped being a Google ranking signal in 2009 (Google Search Central, 2009). Repeating the same phrase over and over used to help; it has been a negative signal for more than a decade. Hidden text, doorway pages and the rest of the old tricks are penalty surfaces now, not ranking ones. If anyone recommends those in 2026, they are out of date.

The limit of what on-page can do

On-page is necessary but not sufficient. A perfectly optimised page on a domain with no authority will still struggle against a rougher page on a heavily linked domain. On-page is the work you do; off-page is the work the world does for you over time. You need both, but you start with the half you own. If you want the rest of the basics in the same plain language, our other guides cover the domain, email and HTTPS layer search engines also read.

Common questions

Is on-page SEO or off-page SEO more important? For a small business starting out, on-page comes first, because it is under your control and you can finish it this week. Off-page (links and mentions) matters too, but it builds slowly and depends on other people. Get the on-page basics right, then earn links over time.

How long until on-page SEO changes show up in Google? Usually four to eight weeks to see movement in Search Console, sometimes sooner for a small site Google crawls often. It is not instant, and it is not overnight, so make the change once and measure it rather than tweaking it every few days.
