What is a title tag?

A title tag is the clickable headline that appears for your page in search results and in the browser tab — the most important on-page SEO element you directly control. Unlike the meta description, the title tag is a genuine ranking signal: Google reads it to understand what the page is about. Two rules cover most small-business cases:

  • Lead with what you do and where — "Emergency Plumber Brisbane" before the business name, because that is what customers search for
  • Keep it under about 60 characters — longer titles get truncated with an ellipsis in results

Every page should carry its own distinct title; the common small-business mistake is the same generic title — often just the business name — repeated on every page, which tells Google nothing about what each page covers. Write the title for the search you want to win, not for your logo.
