What is patch management?

Patch management is the routine of keeping software current, which is the least glamorous and most effective control a small business has:

• It covers everything - operating systems, browsers, the CMS behind your website, its plugins, and the firmware in your router.
• Automatic where possible - the fewer decisions required, the more reliably it happens.
• A short list of exceptions - the systems that cannot auto-update need a named owner and a calendar entry.

Most successful attacks use a vulnerability with a fix already available. Patching is how you stop being the easy option.
