How do I transfer my domain to another registrar?
A registrar transfer is a 3-step process you start from the new registrar, not the old one:
- Get the domain password (also called an EPP or auth code) from your current registrar’s control panel, and check the domain is unlocked for transfer
- Start the transfer at the new registrar — you supply the code, they pull the domain across; .au transfers are free and usually complete within days
- Leave your DNS alone during the move — the records keep answering throughout, so the website and email stay up unless you change nameservers at the same time
Two cautions. If DNSSEC is enabled, have the DS record removed before the transfer and re-enabled after — skipping that can take the domain offline. And .com domains (unlike .au) carry a 60-day transfer lock after registration or a previous transfer. Transfer first, change DNS later — doing both at once is how migrations break.
