What is a nameserver and where do mine live?

A nameserver is the server that holds your domain’s DNS records and answers the internet’s questions about where your website and email live. Which nameservers your domain points to decides who actually controls your DNS:

• The job it does — when someone visits your site or emails you, their connection asks your nameservers for the right address; the nameservers give the answer.
• Where yours are — usually your domain registrar, your web host, or a DNS provider such as Cloudflare; whoever’s nameservers your domain names is where you edit DNS.
• Why it matters — changing nameservers moves control of your entire DNS in one step, so it is a setting worth knowing and protecting.
