What is an SSL Labs grade and what counts as good?
An SSL Labs grade is a letter score from A+ down to F that Qualys SSL Labs assigns to a website’s HTTPS configuration after testing its certificate, protocol versions, and cipher support:
- A or A+ — what a correctly configured modern site gets; it costs nothing extra, because the grade reflects configuration, not how much you paid for the certificate
- A- — usually one minor gap, such as missing HSTS
- B — typically means the server still accepts outdated TLS 1.0 or 1.1 connections
- F — a vulnerability or a broken certificate chain; visitors are likely seeing browser warnings
For a small business, anything below A is a question to put to your hosting provider, not a reason to panic.
